Palm (Flowery) Sunday

Palm (Flowery) Sunday

Слава Ісусу Христу! Glory be to Jesus Christ!

Historical Focus: The feast commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem after raising Lazarus. The people, expecting His arrival and having heard about the miracle, went out to meet Jesus and welcomed Him with their shouts of praise. The Church observes this as a festal day of joy, for it is the arrival of the King, a savior who establishes justice and restores his people. It also initiates Holy Week, blending joy with anticipation of the Passion.  The day, the emphasis is on Christ’s kingship and humility.

Main Theological Themes:

Palm Sunday highlights Christ’s identity as the victorious King who conquers death and offers life.

His humble entry on a colt, fulfilling prophecy (Zechariah 9:9), and the crowd’s “Hosanna” cries, acclaiming Him as Messiah while foreshadowing the Cross.

It calls believers to accept God’s kingdom inwardly, enthroning Christ in the heart through humility and union with His Passion.

Today, the Church greets the Lord who comes to restore our distorted image! We recall the crowds in Jerusalem as they cried out, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord!” It is a shout both of praise and of desire. They expected a King who would restore the kingdom of Israel, but the King who came was far greater than they imagined. Seated on a humble donkey, Christ revealed the true nature of His kingship. This kingship is not one of domination, but of mercy; not of worldly triumph, but of self-emptying (kenotic) love. In this moment, heaven and earth meet. This feast invites each of us to open the gates of our own souls as Jerusalem once opened hers. Christ comes to reign in each heart that welcomes Him with humility and trust. The true throne that Jesus seeks is not gilded with gold but is formed by our repentance and love. Let us lay before Christ the very wills of our souls, and let our lives echo the cry of faith: “Blessed is He who comes to make His dwelling within us!”

Peace and Grace, Tim
